Jesus-Centered Family Discipleship, One Session at a Time

Keep it simple: read God’s Word together, ask honest questions, practice one step of obedience, and end in prayer through Jesus.

God is the ultimate artist and builder who made everything out of nothing. Because he created the universe, our lives have purpose and meaning, all pointing forward to his Son, Jesus.

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."

Have you ever built something amazing out of building blocks? You might gather all the red, blue, and yellow pieces, spread them out on the rug, and carefully snap them together to make a giant castle or a speedy spaceship. It takes a lot of imagination and work to build something cool! But before you could build your spaceship, someone else had to make those plastic blocks in a factory. You needed materials to start your project. When God made the universe, he did something even more incredible. He did not need to go to a store to buy supplies or look for building blocks. He simply used his powerful voice. The very first sentence of the Bible tells us that God made everything—the stars, the oceans, the animals, and you—out of completely nothing! Because God is our Creator, we can trust that he is big enough to handle anything we face today. You are a special part of his wonderful creation!

Sometimes life feels chaotic. Between keeping up with group chats, worrying about how you look on screens, navigating shifting friend groups, and stressing over schoolwork, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. When you are constantly bombarded by messages telling you who you should be or what you should care about, your sense of identity can feel fragile and uncertain. It can feel like your world is spinning out of control. This simple opening line of the Bible offers a massive foundation for our peace of mind. "In the beginning, God created..." reminds us that the universe is not an accident, and neither are you. Before the stars existed, God had a design. When anxiety creeps in or you wonder about your worth, remember that the Maker of the universe intentionally designed your life. You do not have to create your own identity or prove your value to your peers. Your value is permanently secured by the Creator who made you on purpose and loves you deeply. Whenever the pressure gets too high, look up at the sky and remember the God who holds it all together.

These opening words of Scripture are foundational to a Christian worldview. Written originally to the ancient Israelites who were surrounded by cultures worshiping the sun, moon, and various nature deities, this declaration was radically counter-cultural. It established that there is only one God, and he stands completely outside of time and matter. He is the uncreated Creator, sovereign over everything that exists. There is no competing power in the universe; God alone holds the authority of the Maker. As you lead your family, this verse is a wellspring of comfort and discipleship. When our children and teenagers face cultural confusion or personal anxiety, we can point them back to a Creator who designed them with intention. Discipling your kids starts by helping them see that they belong to God. If God is powerful enough to speak the cosmos into existence from absolute nothingness, he is entirely capable of carrying the heavy burdens our family carries today. Whether you are dealing with financial stress, parenting exhaustion, or relational friction, rest in the reality that the Creator is holding your family. Use this verse to remind your children that their lives have objective meaning because they are handcrafted by a loving God.

  1. What is your favorite thing in all of nature that God made, and why do you like it so much?
  2. How does knowing that God created everything out of nothing help us trust him when we face big problems?
  3. Ask each other: When do you feel the most pressure to create your own identity or prove yourself, instead of resting in how God made you?
  4. In what ways can our family show respect and care for the world that God has created?
  1. Go outside together for a ten-minute "wonder walk" this week, pointing out specific things God designed and thanking him for them.
  2. Write this verse on a sticky note and place it on your bathroom mirror to remind everyone that their lives have purpose and design.
  3. Choose one way to care for God's creation as a family this week, such as picking up litter in your neighborhood or starting a small recycling habit.

Creator God, we stand in awe of your power and your endless imagination. Thank you for making the heavens, the earth, and every single person sitting around this table. When the world feels chaotic or we feel overwhelmed by our daily struggles, remind us that you hold all things together. Thank you for loving us so much that you did not just create us, but you also sent Jesus to redeem us and make us a new creation. Please help our family to honor you this week by loving each other and caring for the beautiful world you made. Amen.
