Family Table Study: James 4:7-8
Jesus-Centered Family Discipleship, One Session at a Time
Keep it simple: read God’s Word together, ask honest questions, practice one step of obedience, and end in prayer through Jesus.
Because Jesus opened the way for us, we can stop chasing worldly things and come close to God. When we humble ourselves and stick close to Him, He promises to be close to us.
"Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded."
Imagine you are playing a game of tag. When "IT" is chasing you, you run fast to "base" because that is the safe spot where you cannot be tagged. In life, sometimes we feel scared, tempted to do something wrong, or just grumpy. This Bible verse tells us that God is our safe base. When we "draw near" to Him, it means we stop running away and go straight to Him for help. Think about a magnet. If you get close to a piece of metal, snap! They stick together. God promises that when we move toward Him—by praying or reading the Bible—He moves toward us. We don’t have to hide when we make mistakes. Instead, James says to "cleanse your hands," which just means saying sorry and washing off the bad choices so we can be close to God again. He is always ready to be close to you.
James uses a tough phrase here: "double-minded." It describes that feeling when you want to follow Jesus, but you also really want to fit in with friends who don’t care about Him. It’s like trying to walk in two directions at once; you just end up stuck and frustrated. Whether it is the pressure to keep up a perfect image on social media or the temptation to compromise your values at school, being "double-minded" wears you out. The solution James offers isn't to try harder on your own, but to "submit to God." This means trading your plan for His and trusting that His way of living is actually better. The promise here is powerful: if you resist the enemy's lies, he will flee. You don’t have to be strong on your own; you just have to stand close to God. Drawing near to God might look like putting your phone away for ten minutes to pray, or choosing to tell the truth even when it’s awkward. When you take that step toward God, He doesn't make you wait. He meets you right there. You are never fighting these battles alone because God is right beside you, ready to help when you ask.
In our culture, the word "submit" often carries negative baggage, sounding weak or oppressive. But in James 4, submitting to God is a military term meaning to "arrange oneself under" a leader for protection and victory. It is the safest place we can be. As parents, we often feel the weight of trying to control our circumstances, our children’s futures, or our finances. This passage invites us to release that grip. When we stop fighting for control and surrender to God’s plan, we find the strength to resist the enemy. We cannot effectively resist evil if we are not first aligned with God. James also calls us to "cleanse your hands" and "purify your hearts." This is a call to deal with our own sin before we try to correct everyone else. Our children need to see us "drawing near" to God, not just telling them to do it. They need to see us repent when we lose our temper and witness us prioritizing time with Jesus over our busy schedules. When we model what it looks like to wash our hands of sin and run to the Father, we show our families that God is accessible and full of grace. He is not hiding from us; He is waiting for us to take that first step back to Him.
- What is one thing (like a screen, a hobby, or a worry) that makes it hard for you to "draw near" to God during the week?
- Ask each other: "How can I help you feel closer to God this week?"
- What do you think it looks like to "resist the devil" at school or at work?
- Why is it good news that God promises to draw near to us when we take a step toward Him?
- The Ten-Minute Trade: Pick one distraction (like video games or social media) to give up for just ten minutes each day, and use that time to read a Psalm or pray together instead.
- Hand Washing Prayer: Every time you wash your hands before dinner this week, say a silent prayer asking God to cleanse your heart and help you start fresh.
- Submit and Resist: If a stressful moment happens, stop and say out loud, "I submit this situation to God," then take a deep breath to remember He is with you.
Dear God, thank You for the incredible promise that when we draw near to You, You draw near to us. You do not run away from our messes. Lord Jesus, thank You for making the way clear so we can come boldly to the Father. Please help us submit our worries and plans to You today. Give us the strength to resist temptation and the wisdom to clean our hearts of anything that distracts us from Your love. We want to be close to You. Amen.
