Jesus-Centered Family Discipleship, One Session at a Time

Keep it simple: read God’s Word together, ask honest questions, practice one step of obedience, and end in prayer through Jesus.

God’s Word guides us through life like a light in the dark, showing us the next right step and pointing us to Jesus, who is the true Light of the World.

"Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path."

Imagine walking in your house at night when all the lights are off. It is scary because you might trip over toys or stub your toe on the couch. But if you have a flashlight, you can see exactly where to step. You don't trip because the light shows you the safe way to go. The Bible tells us that God’s Word is just like that flashlight. It pushes back the scary shadows so we can walk safely. Life can sometimes feel confusing or difficult. Maybe you don’t know how to handle a mean friend at school, or you aren’t sure what decision to make. God gave us the Bible to help us see clearly. It doesn't always show us everything that will happen years from now, but like a lamp, it shows us what to do right now. It helps us make good choices, love others, and stay close to God every single day. We can always trust it to show us the way.

There is a lot of noise competing for your attention right now. Between social media feeds, opinions from friends, and the pressure to figure out who you are, it is easy to feel lost or overwhelmed. It can feel like you are walking through a dense fog where you can’t tell which direction is safe and which one leads to a cliff. In those moments, feelings are often unreliable guides because they change constantly. You need something solid to navigate the darkness. The Psalmist describes Scripture as a "lamp to my feet." In ancient times, these lamps were small clay bowls with a flame that only lit up the immediate few steps ahead, not the whole journey. God’s Word works the same way for you. It might not give you a ten-year plan for your career or relationships, but it gives you enough light for today. It tells you the truth about your value when the world lies to you. It offers wisdom on how to treat others when you are angry. When you open the Bible, you are turning on the light so you don’t have to stumble through life in the dark. You can walk with confidence because God is guiding your path.

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, and almost every verse celebrates God’s laws and statutes. This specific verse is one of the most famous, yet we often overlook its context. The Psalmist wasn't writing from a place of ease; throughout the chapter, he speaks of affliction, persecution, and sorrow. He needed a lamp because he was surrounded by darkness. As parents, we often feel that same darkness when we worry about our children’s future, financial stress, or how to lead our families spiritually in a complex culture. We desperately want a floodlight to reveal the distant future, but God offers us a lamp for our feet—just enough light for the next faithful step. We must learn to be content with that daily guidance. Discipling our families means modeling this reliance on Scripture. It is not about having all the answers or being a perfect theologian. It is about showing your children where you go when you are confused or hurting. When you face a tough decision, let your kids hear you say, "I'm not sure what to do, so let's see what the Bible says about wisdom." By doing this, you teach them that the Bible isn't just a history book; it is a survival tool. It is the active, living voice of God guiding us toward Jesus, offering hope and clarity when the path ahead seems dim.

  1. When have you ever been in total darkness, and how did it feel when a light finally turned on?
  2. Why do you think God gives us enough light for just our "feet" (the next step) instead of showing us the whole future at once?
  3. Ask each other: What is one worry or confusing situation you have right now where you need God’s guidance?
  4. How can reading the Bible change the way we react to a bad day or a difficult person?
  1. Flashlight Walk: Take a short walk around your house or yard in the dark with one flashlight, talking about how the light helps you take safe steps.
  2. Verse Hunt: As a family, use a concordance or app to find one specific Bible verse that speaks to a problem someone mentioned during your conversation time.
  3. Morning Lamp: Commit to reading one chapter of Scripture together before school or work to "turn on the light" for the day ahead.

Dear God, thank You for giving us Your Word. The world can be a dark and confusing place, and we often do not know which way to go. Thank You that we do not have to guess or wander alone. Your Bible is a lamp that shows us how to live, how to love, and how to make wise choices. Please help us to trust You, even when we can only see the next step in front of us. Thank You for sending Jesus to be the Light of the World so that we never have to walk in darkness. We love You. Amen.
